ICBC Successfully Holds the CIIE Belt and Road Trade Fair

On the afternoon of November 6, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) successfully held Belt and Road Trade Fair, one of the supporting events for the 3rd China International Import Expo (CIIE), at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai). CCPIT President Gao Yan and ICBC Chairman Chen Siqing attended and addressed the event, and Director-General Li Yong of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) delivered a video speech. The event was also attended by ICBC Board Secretary Guan Xueqing. More than 500 business representatives from 32 countries and regions joined in discussions on site, signing contracts and reaching intent of cooperation on nearly 300 projects with a total value of over RMB3 billion. Meanwhile, ICBC organized online meetings for domestic and foreign enterprises kept off the site by the pandemic and provided them with cross-border matchmaking service.

ICBC Chairman Chen Siqing mentioned in his speech that in the past seven years since the Belt and Road Initiative was proposed, it brings concrete benefits to people in countries along the route and plays an important role in promoting international economic and trade cooperation. ICBC will earnestly carry out the spirit of the 5th Plenum of the 19th Central Committee of the CPC, adhere to the new development concept, and make full efforts to promote the high-quality development of the Belt and Road. Facing increasing instability and uncertainty in global economic development, ICBC will further join hands with enterprises to contribute more to the high-quality development of the Belt and Road through quality economic and trade cooperation, and help build the path of cooperation for responding to challenges on unity, the path of health for protecting health of the public, the path of recovery for promoting economic and social development, and the path of growth for unleashing the development potential.

CCPIT President Gao Yan pointed out that the world is undergoing the great change  that’s rarely seen in a century. In the context of spreading COVID-19, adhering to openness and inclusiveness and promoting connectivity is an inevitable path for coping with global crises and realizing long-term development. To this end, the Belt and Road international cooperation can play a major role. In order to enhance cooperation between China and related countries under the Belt and Road framework, it’s important to promote the building of “Digital Silk Road” with innovation, and uphold openness and cooperation-oriented multilateralism to advance common openness. It’s also imperative to integrate resources of all parts, drive forward cross-nation industrial cooperation and cultivate more new growth engines to realize benefits for all and construct an extensive community of shared interests.

UNIDO Director-General Li Yong said currently, as trade protectionism is prevailing in some areas across the world, CIIE will play an important role in promoting free trade, quality investment and multilateralism. UNIDO will work with CCPIT and organizations in other countries to make constructive contribution to the Belt and Road Initiative, advance trade, investment, innovation and connectivity, and create platforms for spreading best practice and knowledge.

Deputy Director Sun Chenghai of China International Import Expo Bureau, Director Zhai Dongsheng of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) Belt and Road Construction Promotion Center, Standard Bank Group CEO Sim Tshabalala, and Fondazione Italia Cina Chairman Mario Boselli also delivered speeches on the topic of Belt and Road exchanges and cooperation.

Industries involved in the fair covered all the six exhibition areas of the 3rd CIIE, where three sections were especially opened, namely poverty alleviation and social responsibility, medical care and public epidemic prevention, and energy saving and environmental protection. The fair also provided participants with whole-process cross-border matchmaking experience. The enterprises on site not only were enabled for business talks as appointed at the ICBC Business Matchmaking platform, but also could visit the experience area to release need for global source, browse global products and talk freely with interested enterprises while waiting for business talks. For enterprises that had reached primary intent of cooperation, the fair offered areas for deeper negotiation and financial service consultation, to offer advisory support in cross-border policies, laws, logistics and finance.

At the fair, domestic and foreign enterprises achieved plenty of positive and pragmatic results. For instance, subsidiaries of Lanzhou New Area Commercial Logistics Investment Group seized the opportunity of westward opening-up and signed contracts with multiple foreign companies. China Gezhouba Group Overseas Investment Co., Ltd. and a subsidiary of Shwe Taung Group in Myanmar reached the intent of cooperation worth nearly RMB500 million for a power station project.
