Tokyo stocks opened higher Wednesday as a solid showing on Wall Street overnight, coupled with the yen's retreat against the U.S. dollar, raised the market mood and saw export-issues advance and lift the broader market.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 137.64 points, or 0.70 percent, from Tuesday to 19,750.92.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 10.37 points, or 0.66 percent, to 1,575.59.
All industry categories on the main section advanced into positive territory, with precision instrument, insurance, and machinery-related stocks comprising those that gained the most in early trade.
