Tokyo shares opened lower Tuesday on the firmer yen against the U.S. dollar overnight.
As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 22.15 points, or 0.11 percent, from Monday to 19,369.45.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 3.84 points, or 0.25 percent, to 1,545.22.
Decliners were led by nonferrous metal, pulp and paper, and mining issues.
